Charioce XVII's war with the gods was a conflict between King Charioce XVII and the gods. The war was officially declared by Gabriel at Charioce XVII's recommendations.

History

For many centuries, humans worshiped the gods. Temples were built and prayers were sent to the gods who resided above the humans. In return, the gods granted protection to the humans and offered them rewards for their worship. Each new ruler of Anatae was also blessed by the gods and was expected to serve them directly.

When Charioce XVII ascended the throne, he immediately set aside the traditional coronation procedure and crowned himself King. He then declared that humans shall no longer worship the gods and began decimating temples and stealing divine artifacts once belonging to the gods. In his own words, the gods had refused to give him what he wanted so he made the decision to simply "take".

The gods themselves were deeply offended by Charioce XVII's actions, which occurred a mere three years after numerous gods had died trying to contain Bahamut. No thanks was ever given despite the gods' sacrifices. Even worse, Charioce XVII formed a special task force specifically for hunting down and slaying gods. This task force gained their power from special green stones which Charioce XVII had stolen.

The Onyx Task Force soon discovered the existence of their only weakness: a half-angel child named "El", son of former knight Jeanne d'Arc, who had opposed Charioce XVII's actions and was subsequently stripped of her position in the Orleans Knights. El became a major target whom Charioce XVII wished to capture alive or dead before the gods could take him, but Jeanne d'Arc managed to hide her son away.

Two years later, Charioce XVII's hunt for El and the gods continued. El himself was revealed to be living with the renowned Ragged Demon, who Charioce XVII captured and took prisoner, but not before the gods themselves located El and took him back to their land. The loss of El did not worry Charioce XVII. When Gabriel declared war on Charioce XVII, the King himself believed Gabriel was overconfident now that she had El and stated his intention to simply "kill them all".

Gabriel unlocked El's suppressed powers and arranged for him to be at the head of the gods' counterattack against Charioce XVII and his castle. Thousands of angels descended from Heaven while El employed the use of a divine weapon.[1] Unfortunately for Gabriel, Charioce XVII unveiled the ancient weapon Dromos and prepared to use it against El's weapon. He was also shielded and none of the angels could touch him without getting killed. Gabriel's attempt to pull her army back fell on deaf ears, and when Charioce XVII fired Dromos, it was by luck that Gabriel, Sofiel and El survived. None of the other angels, who were visibly overconfident, survived the battle however.

As a cost for using Dromos, Charioce XVII became blind in his left eye.

Aftermath

Gabriel herself, enraged by El's disobediance and unwillingness to pull back when told to, was locked up in a cell in Heaven. While Gabriel planned her next move, El escaped from captivity and returned to the Ragged Demon, aka Azazel. Sofiel was forced to pursue him and try to get him back. Although El agreed to return, he asked for one day so he could say goodbye to his friends. He was murdered by Alessand Visponti, a knight hoping to join the Onyx Task Force. El's death was discovered by all of his friends.

His mother, Jeanne d'Arc, returned to Heaven with Sofiel and offered her services to the gods and declared war on Charioce XVII in their name. Azazel in turn, went to meet Lucifer and demand the demons go to war against Charioce XVII as well. The two armies met at the battlefield and joined forces against Charioce XVII and the Onyx Task Force. Since the green stones were gradually draining the life force of its user, the Onyx Task Force eventually died, leaving behind Charioce XVII.

Jeanne d'Arc and Azazel fired a joined attack at the king, but their attack was shield bY Kaisar Lidfard, who had come to view Jeanne and Azazel's need for vengeance as "blind rage" and senseless. Kaisar died from his wounds, and in that moment, Bahamut returned from another dimension, an event which Charioce XVII predicted. Jeanne and Azazel ceased their fighting against the King while the rest of their armies focused on Bahamut, who was seemingly annihilated by a blast from Dromos, fired by Charioce XVII.

Aftermath

Charioce XVII was declared a hero by the people while the gods, for reasons unclear, seemingly forgave Charioce XVII and ceased the war. Jeanne d'Arc returned to her farm life. Her son El was also buried in a marked grave which she and Azazel jointly bid their farewell to.

Alessand, El's murderer, never became a member of the Onyx Task Force and died at the hands of a demon child. Kaisar himself was brought back as a zombie by Rita. Charioce XVII, as a cost for using Dromos again, lost sight in his right eye while his girlfriend Nina Drango, who had assisted him in firing at Bahamut, lost her voice.

Trivia

  • While Charioce XVII gave the reason for his war with the gods as being their refusal to "give him what he wanted" (implied to be a means to defeat Bahamut), he never stated his reason for enslaving the demon kind.
  • Since Charioce XVII refused to negotiate peacefully with Gabriel and even dared her to use force against him, he is responsible for the entire conflict himself, yet Favaro Leone considers Charioce guiltless.
  • This conflict saw the near-extinction of the gods and angels, with three named survivors being Gabriel, Sofiel, and Ridwan.
